まず言えることは、
主役は「花」ってこと。

その花を「束ねる」際、
自分が大事にしている8つの要素を
それぞれの章に分けて記載していきます。

Firstly,
The main character is the flower.

Let me tell you in each chapter about what are
my most important elements when
I bunch the flowers.

1

【Tuning】

Combinations are boundless.
But I would rather use the word liberty.
The flowers are 100% passive and will
coexist whatever combination you create.
So tuning isn’t only the thing that we intended to do,
there is sometimes certainty
and the unexpected, and I'll be tuning with this in mind.
It's not only arranging beautiful flowers, the way of blooming,
the texture of flower petals and the shape of leaves.
Length and flexibility of stem,
color tone, color gradation of changes with
time are also important to consider.
I take these factors into account and plan 80%,
but the rest I leave to the flower’s miraculous and
unexpected beauty.
The flower wilting is also part of my performance.
Over time, the flowers start to improvise together unexpectedly,
that is part of my tuning.

Those are my thoughts on tuning.

【Pure】

It’s not guaranteed to work because you use expensive flowers.
In cooking, you can't make a genuine dish without making
the best use of the ingredient's true nature,
even if you have expensive and extremely good ingredients.

The flowers are the same.

Even with common, everyday flowers,
it’s possible to create something unexpected.
I need to be face-to-face with the flowers, with just a pure and
honest mind to get inspiration and break through creatively.
I think those are the most important things.
Often you get stuck in the same rut or rehash work from the past
when you have been practicing something for a while,
but you should let this go and become awake.
I think a neutral mind,
pure heart and basic technique will provide a positive effect
on the work as well as flowers.

Make flowers like more flowers and more than the flowers.

【Color】

The color tone for flowers isn't quite the same as
with fashion and painting.
Because the flowers are alive and the color
might change over a period of time.
It was almost green when it was a bud,
but then became quite a bold color when it bloomed
- that is one of the flower's distinctive features.
Also, the colors carry messages.
I need to keep in mind to pick flowers depending on the situation,
I think that is one of the foundational elements.
You'll be able to make fine work if you calculate and
combine flowers’ form and nature,
even if you mix lots of colors.
Of course, you need to balance sizes and amounts,
but only natural colors could possibly do.
Instinctively I often pick out a color from an element of
one of the flowers and from it create a color gradation.
This is one of the characteristics of my art.
Of course, the gradations of similar color are always good,
but I also add completely different colors as an accent.
I often present the light and shade made from
well balanced moderate tones against bright colors.

I would say that the color of the flowers doesn't follow a trend and
my mission
is to make the most of the natural colors rather than the artificial.

【Time】

The flowers are alive and will change with time passing.

The flowers have many different stages,
the bud will bloom and vibrant color will fade.
I often design with periods of time in mind.
In other words, I usually consider how the flowers will change a few days
in the future and plan the combinations, layout and elevation difference.
It doesn’t always go as planned,
but often the flowers show us something more than expected.
At each stage of their limited lives,
flowers are optimally beautiful according to
the intentions of nature, this beauty is what is unexpected.
I appreciate their whole, genuine beauty because of
this change over time - it’s not just a single moment.

No day is the same for us and it’s the same for flowers,
changing as time passes.

【Fragrance】

The flowers have a distinct natural fragrance. It has a healing effect as well.
I would rather go with either the flowers or greens
that have a scent when I bunch up to a bouquet.
I like to ensure the fragrance of my creation appeals as
much as how it looks visually.
Also, the scent sometimes reminds you of the memories and
feelings of the moment.
Being reminded of these memories is one of the specific features of
plants that have an evocative scent.
There are plenty of extremely good quality artificial flowers
in the market
but they can’t replicate a real flower's scent
(even if it looks authentic).
They hardly ever manage to have that.

If you can be surrounded by seasonal flowers,
the scent of nature and flowers you can achieve
“breathing happiness”.

【Charm】

There are a few images associated with the word “charm”
and I think they are more curvilinear than linearly.
There are no corners, only roundness.
That is the thing I most care about is the charm,
whether consciously or unconsciously.
The flowers and my creation are not just for adults, but for all.
I think it’s essential to have charm when you search for
a substantial part for all of us. Can’t do without.
It gives a smile for sure when a person receives flowers
that were designed with “charm”.
Also, charm is an important element for professional designers like myself
who make full use of the technique.

The flowers are simply beautiful enough just themselves.

The bouquet that has only a type of flowers but still really beautiful,
that is the excellence of the flowers.
Different types of flowers require the use of some techniques combined and
present a completely different aspect of beauty.
Making an absolutely fashionable design is easy,
but making slightly less perfect gives glamour and possibly delivers charm.
I think if your creative approach is
free and not bound by ‘professional’ considerations it will be easier to create charm.
Everyday I spend time with flowers,
creating charming work from a neutral mind and pure heart
(as I stated in chapter 2).

【Life】

Arranging flowers does not mean 'finishing them off,
it's more like giving them another life.

Flowers are not tools.
They are something to love and should be kept alive.
I believe that flowers have intentions.
But cannot be heard physically.
I must interpret their voice with my mind.
I have worked with flowers for a long time and
this is the thing I really care about year after year.
The period immediately after being picked from the ground is
when the flower is at its peak.
Sadly, changing over time it will fade towards death.
My job is handling flowers, I have a mission to bear in mind that.
The flowers and nature themselves don't have any trends.
Those are human ideas.
If you cannot appreciate this and treat flowers only as a prop or tool,
the outcome will have little depth or tasteless.
I don’t actually know what the answer is.
But I think the person who handles flowers with love,
more or less will also be handling them respectfully as well.

Each flower has life as well as like us.

I admire the life of flowers and handling them with
care is a very important and basic thing.
The flowers may admire you in return if you handle them well -
the flowers are a living thing.
The flowers may be on your side at least even
if they are not admired you back.
When you make an arrangement with flowers that are on your side,
the creation will have depth and be deeply moving - something
that can’t be achieved with effort alone.

【Thanks】

Thanks to flowers.
Appreciate the flowers that come to my hands.
That is my starting point.
The flowers have a soul.
So do animals.
The same soul humans have.

The flowers plucked from the earth are “the star”.

The flowers make you the star if you care about the way to
handle them, they appreciate it.
All flowers are connected.
These are the words from my mum who I admire and
has a lot of experience working with flowers.

Meet flowers,
Know the flowers,
Create with flowers.
that is of TSUTAYA DESIGN Style,
It is also the belief of
Yoshimitsu Tsutaya.
Color, freshness, and dynamism,
Tuning the functional beauty of
such flowers and plants,
Connect chance and inevitability
To “neo - natural beauty”
Continue to guide.
